The Great Instagram Branding Freak-Out of 2016

So, Instagram changed their logo. The internet broke out in rage!

Maybe the internet was right. Personally, I have to say that the Instagram logo was one of the few application icons that I actually liked and strongly associated with the brand. While I understand what the new design is looking to accomplish. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Call me old-school or even nostalgic if you want, but I’m sad to see the old Instagram logo go. Mostly because it was a strong design from the beginning and stayed strong over time. It goes without saying that the internet isn’t happy about the redesign.

Surprisingly, Instagram transformed their application 6 months ago, however it looks like they’re at it again. It looks like what they are doing is giving more prominence to the content itself by flattening and drowning out the interface.

Did you know that Instagram’s CEO and co-founder, Kevin Systrom, designed the original retro-icon? It was a render of an actual Camera an obvious relative to the Polaroid Cameras of the 80’s and 90’s.

While Internally, Instagram realized that they weren’t selling cameras, and that the camera had nothing to do with Instagram, so they created the Instagram 2.0 Icon which was widely popularized, and still heavily influenced by the camera design.

Instagram CEO and Co-Founder, Kevin System’s Full Response from Business Insider:

“I designed the original one – and honestly, it came down to branding. I’m very excited about our 2.0 icon and the reaction has been overwhelmingly positive. The initial icon was a rendering of an actual camera that had nothing to do with Instagram. At that point, you have to realize, we had 80 users and I really just liked the idea of having a retro camera stand for Instagram.

It became really clear very quickly that we needed our own brand, and as part of that we enlisted help from one of our users Cole Rise – who after many iterations has created a really gorgeous icon that we all identify with as Instagram today.”

Cole Rise is very stoked on the new logo as well, mashable featured an article interviewing Rise and he mentioned, “I’m super stoked on the new one.”. “I love the minimalism. Regardless of the colors behind it, the white shape, the actual bones of the new symbol itself, is beautiful, and I think that can persist over time.”, He said.

The popular photo-sharing application not only ditched the old camera icon they went in an entirely different direction.

Ian Spalter, Instagram’s head of design commented on the redesign in a recent Medium post;

“Brands, logos and products develop deep connections and associations with people, so you don’t just want to change them for the sake of novelty. But the Instagram icon and design was beginning to feel, well… not reflective of the community, and we thought we could make it better.”
